SLJ Week 1 Activity 4

LI: To create a piece of insect art

This week for our activity 4, from a summer learning journey. We were inspired by art creations by Raku Inoue . We went outside and collected leaves, twigs, and other plant debris to create our own insect images that we thought could make an insect out of native wood or other fresh , uneven , dead plants . Something i found interesting about doing this activity was exploring through the native in our school and being able to be creative and find plants or sticks twigs that i thought could make a creative insect.I found it quite hard to find my items to create my insect because i was thinking about to much insects so i went for a simple one and chose to do a stick insect . I enjoyed this activity because I got to explore with my friends to find my insects items and I got to hear what they were doing and it gave me ideas . Here are three interesting things about stick insects : Stick insects have eyes but there vision is a bit poor but they don't ears but they can sense important sounds , It takes about 8 months for  stick insects to hatch  from there eggs , Stick insects can live upto 5 years but female stick insects can live as twice as male stick insects live .

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?

LI: To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation, ‘Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that information to help us form an opinion that we could justify with evidence.I say everyone should wear and not wear.

Yes why people should were masks.

Yes people should wear mask because they might get coronavirus.

No why people should not wear masks.

No because people might not like wearing masks and also it might feel uncomfortable.

Exploring our national current events

 LI: To identify author’s purpose.

Authors write for a purpose (reason). These reasons are to persuade, inform or entertain (PIE). Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. The thing that i found intrusion is that i didn't know that they found a black panther in the south island in Christchurch.

Poem DLO

LI:To try and stop being embarrassed

Today for writing we were reading an a embarrassment poem. The is book was about dealing embarrassment or handling it. We created a DLO with instructions about how to stop being embarrassed. 1st you must learn the secret to stop being embarrassed. 2nd When embarrassment strikes, imagine it is a temporary STOP sign. Finally  if you want to become an embarrassment expert, you must learn the most difficult technique of all, which is to laugh and keep laughing until the moment grows fainter and fainter

Lasagne Maths Strategy

LI:  To explain how we solved our maths equations.

For Maths we worked in mixed math groups to practice our team skills and to help us explain how we solved these word problems. The topic of these word problems were about Metric Measurements, which was more specifically about weight and mass. The word problem was about the ingredients and the weight of these ingredients. We had to find the weight of the missing ingredient by adding up the weight of the ingredients we knew, and subtracting it from the weight of the whole food.

Why is it important to use our PBS CARE values?

LI: To write an explanation using TEEL paragraphs

This week we have been revising explanation writing. Next week is our assessment week so we did this collaborative challenge to remind ourselves what is needed when we write explanations. We found it interesting the way the paragraphs all connected at the end and you could see the links between the ideas.

The screencastify link of us reading our explanation can be found here:

Choices Explanation

LI: To make wise choices

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Why do you drop rubbish in the sewers when you are polluting the sea?

Did you know that everyday people throw rubbish on the floor and the wind is pushing the rubbish in the sea or the sowers and they will end up in the sea and we need to do something about it.

Birds pick up the rubbish everyday and they feed it to their babies and sometimes when the birds eat the plastic and they die or their babies will die without food because people are not putting their rubbish in the bin so we need to start putting rubbish in the bin.

Most of the rubbish end up in the sea and the sea animals are eating it because they are mistaking it for food.Sea trials are dying because people are not throwing their rubbish away they are just throwing it on the floor and people are just walking past the rubbish.

Everyday one million sea animals die a day and this happens because we are throwing rubbish on the floor and most people don't care about the invention and some people do care about the invention that is why we have to do something about it.

This week we wrote about why is it important to make wise choices. And picked something going on in the world. I did Plastic Pollution. The reason why i did plastic pollution is because people need to be remind on to throw there rubbish away.

Inquiry

LI: To think deeply about a change I would make

If I was Prime Minister I would I will make sure that there is a pool in every school and I will make sure that in every school gets free lunch.

The reason why is because it is important that children learn to swim and are safe in the water. The reason why I would let schools have free lunch is so if some does not have lunch they can have some at school.

Inquiry

LI: To decide which political party will get your vote by making an informed choice

To decide which political party I would vote for Green party I read a summary of the policies each party wants to introduce should they win the election and the right to form a government to run NZ. Doing this allowed me to make an informed decision.
If I was 18 I would vote for Green party because they are helping NZ's Pasifika. This means if Green party Won the election in my electorate Mark Simiona would be our member of parliament and someone would become the Prime Minister.

Vincent Van Gogh Timeline

LI: To create a timeline to show the life of Vincent Van Gogh.

Made with Padlet

My group worked collaboratively using Padlet to create a timeline about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh was an artist from the post impressionist movement which meant he liked to paint still life paintings that captured a moment in time. We found it really interesting that while he was alive he didn't sell many paintings but in 1990, 100 years after his death, a painting by him sold for $82.5 million!

What is Science

L.I To summarise the information. L.I: to find the most vital ideas from the information to help us answer the question what is science.

This week for reading we have been learning about what science is. We started off with writing down what we already knew about science on sticky notes, then we watched a video to find out more. While watching the video we used the sticky notes to make notes. The video explains the areas of science, the difference between basic science and applied science. One thing we found really interesting was that you use chemistry, physics, and biology when you make a lime juice from fresh limes. We negotiated and shared ideas to create a summary, we used the sticky notes to create sentences for the summary. Our group worked collaboratively to get these activities completed. We enjoyed doing this activity as we were able to practise negotiating and taking time to respect everybody's ideas. We have summarised our learning below. Science is about getting knowledge from asking questions . It is divided into 3 areas: Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Science is both basic and applied, basic science using what you know. Science is either beneficial or harmful depending on how you view and use it. Questions we want to ask: Where can science be used? Why is science important to our world ? When do scientists ask questions?

Making Connections to problem solving

LI:To explore problem solving.

Today in the morning the wifi went was not working and we had to do something different. So we did tangram it is an ancient Chinese puzzle. We used A4 paper and we had to cut them out but had no lines to follow to make the shapes. We had to listen carefully to the instructions and follow them to make our puzzle correctly.  After we made our puzzle we tried to put all the shapes together to make a square. It was really hard at first as we were learning how to problem solve. It os important when you are problem solving to ask some questions and look for different ways to find the answer. My partner and I were working great with each other. One fact I found interesting was that many years ago when people were on ships and got bored so they made animals shapes with their tangram puzzles.

6 Sentence Story

L.I.Use 6 sentences to set up the structure of a narrative

Today my group wrote 6 sentence stories to help us take risks with our writing. We did this by sharing our ideas and writing sentence that drop hints about what was happening in the picture we chose to write about. We helped each other by suggesting ideas to each other to make our stories more interesting.

They were about to walk into the cave that went underground. The cave was so big there had to be more beyond the path.Nick was good at exploring.Suddenly  the shadow from the mythical creature appeared behind them. Jim and Tim were so scared about getting eaten by the creatures that they fainted.Screaming they ran towards the light.

Tech: Coding

LI: To make the mbot go around a race track.

Today Miss Ferguson challenged us to code the mbot to go around a racetrack. To do this the code needs to allow the mbot to sense the black line. When it can't find the line the mbot moves backwards and forwards until it corrects itself.

I really liked this activity and my fastest lap time 43.24 seconds. Mr Dunn taught some of us how to use a formula to work out the speed. My speed was 0.21 metres per second which meant I came in 7th.

Summarising

LI: to learn more about Matariki

This week for Inquiry we learnt about Matariki. In our DLO we summarised the general idea of Matariki and its story. We picked out twenty important words related to Matariki, then from those twenty words, we picked the six of the most important words. Using those six words we summarised the general idea of Matariki using only a few short sentences to make it simple.

Matariki/What are the star names?

L.I: To create a image of the Matariki cluster.

For the new Te reo challenge we had to created our own original drawing of the matariki stars.then we had to put  all of them in the right places as if there where already in the sky.

Three brids

L.I: To use our knowledge and find three interesting information and fact about these matariki harvesting birds.

Optical illusions

L.I:To explain what an optical Illusion

This DLO shows what is a optical Illusion and how an Optical Illusion happens. On this DLO it shows what Optical l Illusion means. We used one Optical l Illusion and found out what wrong with it. I worked with my group to find interesting information about optical l Illusion information. Mr Johnston also came in to help us with this.

Venn Diagram

LI: to create a DLO of tool for harvesting.

This Venn Diagram it shows how people used to celebrate matariki, how people celebrate matariki now and how do now and then do the same thing. I worked with Makaili RJ Leroy and Akuhata as a group and we found information about what people do on matariki now days. As we created this I learned some new interesting facts about matariki such as maori people make things out of flax like kites.

What is Matariki

LI: To use our smart searching skills to find information that tells others what Matariki is.

Te Reo Challenges

LI: To draw and label the Matariki cluster of stars

This week for the Te Reo challenges is that Miss Pryde gave the school a Te Reo challenge. We had to make the stars of Matariki and name them. Also the Matariki is the Maori new year.

Tech

Today at tech me and the eothe year 8’s we were coding the mbots to make a stairway with a maker. Today we had to try and make the mbot draw a star. Then we got chalk and started drawing stars on the stars outside. Then we started to decorate our star. When we finished our star we pretended to be the mbot and went in a star shape walking on the lines. The reason we did stars is because it was matariki week.

Periscope

LI:to explain Periscope work.

Today Mr Johnston came and taught us what periscope are they, how they are used and who uses them.We found out that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. That means if the light hits the mirror at 45 degrees it reflects the light back at 45 desegregation.it was fun because we got to play with the Periscope.

Light Facts

LI:To share 5 facts about light that we find interesting.

We worked collaboratively to create a DLO that shows facts about light. One fact that interests me is White light is made up of the colours ROYGBIV because i like white makes ROYGNIV and ROYGNIV makes white.

Friday, 19 June 2020

Tech

LI:TO use the infrared sensors to follow the lines.

This week for Tech we went back to using mbots. We had to use the skills that we did last week. And those skills were Binary's.Then we had to make the mbot move on a black infinity symbol with out hitting the white spots if the left sensor hit's the white it slows down if the right one it's the white spot it does the some thing like the left one.But if both of them hit the white spot the mbot stops moving. Then we had a little play with the mbots before we had to go.
Here are some Binary's

00-0
01-1
10-2
11-3

Here is the code me and the year 8's did.

Evaluating a Text

LI: To read the information in the text, think about what you have read and form an opinion

We read the story ‘The Protest March’ then made connections between what is happening in the world now. We used the information in the story and our prior knowledge to help us form an opinion.

Hotcakes Recipe

LI: To structure and write a procedural text.

For writing we have been learning how to write a procedural text. To do this we used the recipe we followed at Tech. This procedure tells the reader how to make hot cakes. Before we wrote this we worked collaboratively to order the pictures Mrs Anderson took of us making the hotcakes. Once we had done that we matched each photo with a verb. A verb is an action word and tells anyone following the recipe what they need to do. After that we use the verbs as sentence starters and collaboratively wrote a list of instructions.

Tech

Today for Tech me and the year 8's went to robotics and we had to do some maths i did know how to do it but at lest i did. Then we had to write are name's in numbers my one was this.

00001,01100,10110,01000,00001,10100,00001

A K U H A T A
Then we had to make a letters by using the numbers i did not do that because i took so long at doing the maths to get the numbers.

Then we went out side to do with Mrs Ferguson's number on a piece of paper. Then she show us same games that required some maths it was so hard i stop playing the game. Then we had to go back to school.

Gingerbread Man

L.I To retell the story of the gingerbread man.

Today we read the story of a gingerbread man. The old lady was making a gingerbread man but she told the little boy to watch it the little boy was watching it but he was daydreaming. Then the gingerbread man jumped out of the oven and ran out of the house. He passed the little boy, two well dodgers , two ditch diggers, a bear. He came to a wolf but he did not outrun the fox because the fox tricked the gingerbread man and ate him all up.

Video here

How animals protect themselves

Today we read how animals protect themselves. In this book it tells us how animals protect themselves from predators. One of the animals called Tortoises have a hard shell that can help protect them from preadators.

An interesting fact i fund was this.

The Tawny Frogmouth can disguise itself to look like a tree.

PBS Live stream

Today was the 7th live stream for the school. We saw people get bags and certificates for being kind and we saw people sing the song and we had the tidy kiwi and at the end we had a little song that finish the livestream.

Tech

LI: To learn how to code an m-bot to sense something, by using the force.

Today at Tamaki College I went to robotics with the year 8's. In robotics we focused on using sensors by using the force. We first learnt about ultrasonic, which means sound waves that can't be heard by people. Once we learnt about ultrasonic, we started coding our m-bots on m-block to sense our hand, so it goes the other way. When we did our codes, we wrote the input, algorithm and output of our code on a google slide and included a video showing our mbots sensing our hand.

Cityscape of Sydney

LI To write a description of my Cityscape using prepositions.

On the right hand side of my Cityscape there is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Did you know it is 97 years old? The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the widest long-span bridge and the tallest steel arch bridge in the world.  On the left hand side beside the bridge is the Sydney Opera House which is one of the most famous performing art centres in the world. Suncorp Place beside is one of the tallest buildings in Sydney. The oldest building in Sydney is the Elizabeth Farm. I had blended the colours purple, red and blue. In the middle of my cityscape, I have a reflection of my silhouette of Sydney, Australia.

Word Cline: Sad

LI: To find 5 interesting words that increase in intensity (have a stronger meaning) as you move up the line.

Today we used the thesaurus to make a word cline for the word ‘sad’. As the words go up the line they become more powerful. Here is an example of a sentence I wrote today using my word cline. I am always depressed on the weekends because I get bored.
